5 Steps to Start a Diesel Generator

I. Preparation before starting diesel generator
Diesel generators must always check whether the cooling water or antifreeze in the water tank of the diesel engine is satisfactory before starting up, if there is a shortage to fill up. Pull out the fuel gauge to check whether there is a lack of lubricant, if there is a lack of the specified “static full” scale, then carefully check the relevant components for potential fault, and only start the machine if the fault is found and corrected in time.

II. Starting diesel generator with load is strictly prohibited
It is important to note that the output air switch of the diesel generator must be closed before starting. After starting, the diesel engine of common generator set will run at idle speed for 3-5 minutes (about 700 rpm) in winter when the temperature is relatively low and idle operation time should be prolonged for several minutes. After starting the diesel engine, first observe whether the fuel pressure is normal and whether there are abnormal phenomena such as fuel leakage and water leakage, (fuel pressure must be above 0.2MPa under normal conditions). If abnormality is found, stop the engine immediately for maintenance. If there is no abnormal phenomenon to raise the speed of the diesel engine to the rated speed of 1500 rpm, the generator display frequency is 50HZ and the voltage is 400V, then the output air switch can be closed and put into operation. Generator sets are not allowed to operate without load for a long time. (Because long no-load operation will result in carbon deposit due to the incomplete combustion of diesel fuel injected from the diesel engine injector, resulting in air leakage of valves and piston rings.) If it is an automatic generator set, idle operation is not required, because the automatic set is generally equipped with a water heater, which keeps the diesel engine block at about 45 C at all times, and the diesel engine can be powered normally within 8-15 seconds after starting.

III. Pay attention to observing the working state of diesel generator set in operation
In the work of diesel generator, special person should be on duty, and a series of possible faults should be observed frequently, especially the changes of important factors such as fuel pressure, water temperature, fuel temperature, voltage and frequency. In addition, we should pay attention to having enough diesel fuel. If the fuel is interrupted in operation, it will objectively cause the loaded shutdown, which may cause damage to the excitation control system and related components of the generator.

IV. Diesel generator sets are strictly prohibited from stopping under load
Before each stop, the load must be cut off step by step, then the output air switch of the generator set must be closed, and the diesel engine must be slowed down to idle speed for about 3-5 minutes before stopping.

V. Safety Operation Rules for Diesel Generator Sets:
(1) For a diesel-powered generator, the operation of its engine parts shall be carried out in accordance with the relevant regulations of the internal combustion engine.
(2) Before starting the generator, it is necessary to carefully check whether the wiring of each part is correct, whether the connecting parts are reliable, whether the brush is normal, whether the pressure meets the requirements and whether the ground wire is good.
(3) Before starting the diesel generator, place the resistance value of excitation resistor in a large position and disconnect the output switch. The generator with clutch should disengage the clutch. Start the diesel engine without load and run smoothly before starting the generator.
(4) When the diesel generator starts to run, pay attention to mechanical noise and abnormal vibration at any time. After confirming that the condition is normal, adjust the generator to the rated speed and the voltage to the rated value, then close the output switch to supply power to the outside. The load should be gradually increased to achieve three-phase balance.
(5) Parallel operation of diesel generator must satisfy the conditions of same frequency, same voltage, same phase and same phase sequence.
(6) All diesel generators ready for parallel operation must have entered normal and stable operation.
(7) After receiving the signal of “Prepare for Parallel Connection”, adjust the speed of the diesel engine according to the whole device and close at the same time.
(8) Diesel generators operating in parallel shall reasonably adjust their loads and equally distribute the active and reactive power of each generator. Active power is regulated by the engine throttle and reactive power by excitation.
(9) Diesel generators in operation should pay close attention to the sound of the engine and observe whether various instrument indications are within the normal range. Check whether the running part is normal and the temperature rise of the diesel generator is too high. And record the operation.
(10) When the diesel generator stops, first reduce the load, return the excitation resistor to a small value, then cut off the switch in order to stop the diesel engine.
(11) If a diesel generator operated in parallel needs to stop one due to load drop, the load of one generator to be stopped shall first be transferred to the generator that continues to operate, and then the diesel generator shall be stopped by the method of stopping one generator. If all the stops are required, the load should be cut off first and then the single generator should be stopped.
(12) Mobile diesel generator, the chassis must be parked on a stable basis before use, and must not move when running.
(13) When the diesel generator is in operation, voltage should be considered even if no excitation is applied. It is forbidden to work on the lead-off line of the rotating generator and to touch the rotor or clean it by hand. Generators in operation must not be covered with canvas, etc. 14. Diesel generators must be inspected carefully for tools, materials and other impurities between rotor and stator slots after maintenance to avoid damaging the generators during operation.
